All of MAME's source code is either our own or freely available. It is not our intention to infringe on any copyrights or patents on the original games. This is considered a nice side effect, and is not MAME's primary focus. Of course, in order to preserve the games and demonstrate that the emulated behavior matches the original, you must also be able to actually play the games. This is done both for educational purposes and for preservation purposes, in order to prevent many historical games from disappearing forever once the hardware they run on stops working. Its main purpose is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines. MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era. When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer.

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. The app can currently emulate over 32000 individual systems from the last 5 decades. The tool is mostly programmed in C with some core components in C++.

The program covered arcade machines, while MESS covered everything else.

As a nice side-effect, the software allows to use on a modern PC those programs and games which were originally developed for the emulated machines.Īt one point there were actually two separate projects, MAME and MESS. The program, formerly was an acronym which stood for Multi Arcade Machine Emulator, documents and reproduces through emulation the inner components of arcade machines, computers, consoles, chess computers, calculators, and many other types of electronic amusement machines. Over time, the app absorbed the sister-project MESS (Multi Emulator Super System), so the app now documents a wide variety of (mostly vintage) computers, video game consoles and calculators, in addition to the arcade video games that were its initial focus. The fact that the software is usable serves primarily to validate the accuracy of the documentation (how else can you prove that you have recreated the hardware faithfully?). The source code to the app serves as this documentation. This is achieved by documenting the hardware and how it functions. As electronic technology continues to rush forward, MAME prevents this important “vintage” software from being lost and forgotten.

Despite this, the user focused interface offers a large amount of customability and a huge insight into this massive project.MAME is great free emulator that lets you play thousands of games for PC! The app’s purpose is to preserve decades of software history.

With thousands of emulated pieces of hardware and a much larger collection of potential games available, MAME is more of a technical collection than a fully functioning emulator. While the preservation rather than the actual playing of arcade games is the primary function of Neo MAME32, the option does exist. Neo MAME32 is a variation of the open source project, adding a graphical user interface which makes it much easier for someone to jump in and operate. MAME was envisioned as a solution to this loss by simulating the (often basic) hardware through an emulator. With the loss of physical hardware cabinets specifically created to run certain programs, both hardware and software are lost to time. Designed to digitally preserve the operation of arcade cabinets, the MAME project have has been releasing updates for over 20 years. Neo MAME32 is a free arcade hardware simulator.
